BIO NOTES

Alice Freund, MFA

My creative energy is

literally and truly

ricocheted off others

WHY?

I‘m intrigued by the uniqueness of individuals, and seek to discover their qualities, grace and textures.

And besides within my own amazing family, I seek to discover these qualities in my two other favorite spheres of exploration and creativity:

Creating figurative artwork- devising reflections of the endless varieties of human forms, for delight and enlightenment

And in my communities- striving to feel a useful part of them, especially as we share the 'Arts'

ARTS IN THE COMMUNITY

Sharing the Arts

Most particularly, I’ve spent most of my professional life promoting all art forms to young people, -especially as the arts can enhance general learning skills within all fields, including STEM.

The most amazing thing to witness is how just experiencing any one of the art forms historically produced by any set of the world's people can powerfully attract students' interest.  All artforms reveal so much about an era, locale, individuality as well as universality-- which can expand viewpoints, empathy and knowledge.  Our common human rhythms and emotions become apparent through the experience. Taking advantage of the 'Arts' -what a remarkable and productive way to engage a student of any age!

And the creativity, discipline, self-confidence, sensitivities, communication abilities, and joy developed through participating in an any of the artforms, are skillsets applicable and valuable to all other academic pursuits.

In Education

I applied these principles when teaching several years of elementary school GATE programs, high school, and Community College Art and Humanities classes, and led a couple of school grants.

For fun, and to promote these values, I’ve initiated and led four different non-profit programs-- for two elementary schools, and two serving a high school district.  These programs integrated existing specific classroom study with during and after-school related cultural and environmental-themed activities.  These organizations partnered with cities, corporations; with the schools’ administration, staff, parent groups, as well as engaging local clubs as personal student mentors.  Student artwork and photographs were published and exhibited in public spaces.

Pursuing a passion for integrating arts with other civic goals, I served two terms as the city of Sunnyvale Arts Commission chair, and also on the Santa Clara County Board of Education’s Arts Advisory Board.  I’ve enjoyed leading and participating in several community projects for The Euphrat Museum of Art, in Cupertino, CA, and also for the Arts Council of Silicon Valley.

Another favorite community involvement that uniquely inspires me, although outside the Arts, has been with Sunnyvale's Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).

I was proudly a runner-up for Sunnyvale's Volunteer of the Year Award, in a particularly busy year. The Leadership Sunnyvale program, a 9-months long training ground for local managers and community activists, honored me with their 10th Anniversary Outstanding Alumnus Award.  Emphasis on the Arts can indeed find visibility and recognition.
